The Story of a CGS Family with Kelly and Maureen Stone and Elizabeth Burghart
“We love because he first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19
Deacon Kelly and Maureen Stone with their daughter Elizabeth Burghart join us on the podcast to share their story of how they ALL got involved in the work of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and how it has changed their lives and spiritual work.
Kelly and Maureen Stone live near Indianola and attend St. John the Apostle in Norwalk, Iowa . They married in 1979 and have five grown married children and 14 grandchildren. Kelly is an engineer and Maureen is an educator.
Maureen began a Level I Formation Course in 2002 and continued on to Level II and Level III. She has served as a catechist in local parishes for 20 years. In 2018 she had the great pleasure of attending a national seminal Infant/Toddler formation in Scottsdale, AZ. Through the years she has served on the local Shepherd Staff board which hosts Formation Courses and promotes Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in Iowa. She worked as an assistant at School of Mary ~ Montessori in the Des Moines Metro from 2014-2018. Maureen's husband, Deacon Kelly, and four daughters, Meggan Young, Elizabeth Burghart, Mary Wolf and Ginny Rossi are Catechesis of Good Shepherd catechists. She helped coordinate the growth of CGS for a local parish for 10 years. She is currently a volunteer coordinator for CGS at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk, Iowa
Deacon Kelly began a Level I Formation Course in 2013 after assisting in the atrium. He had spent many years prior to his Formation listening to other family members and friends speak of the joy and grace in the work! In 2014, as his Level I course was coming to an end, he heard a call to become a deacon. He was ordained to the permanent diaconate in August 2018. He is currently assigned to St. John the Apostle church in Norwalk, Iowa. He assists in CGS as a substitute catechist and material maker. He also leads baptism classes and relies heavily on "Baptism is a Beginning", edited by Rebekah Rojcewicz.
Elizabeth Burghart lives in Atchison, KS with her husband, and three children. She is a Level III catechist at St. Benedict Parish and a Primary Assistant for Holy Family Montessori Co-op.
From Elizabeth Burghart – “When I was thirteen years old, I saw the Eucharistic Presence of the Good Shepherd presentation. I was deeply drawn to the work and I was eager to receive training. I was permitted to join an upcoming Level I Formation Course. At the time, I did not know the remarkable impact Catechesis of the Good Shepherd would have on my life. My early years as a catechist were enriched by meeting Sofia Cavalletti and Silvana Montanaro in Rome. I soon went on to receive training in Levels II and III as well as Primary Montessori training.
I have had the joy of serving as a Catechist of the Good Shepherd since 2008. Throughout my work, whether in parishes, Montessori schools or my own home, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has been a strong foundation and inspiration. CGS is a “golden thread” in my life. Indeed, it is one of the greatest gifts I have received.”

Rebekah joins us on the podcast to give us a glimpse at who Sofia Cavalletti was. She shares stories about Sofia and what she remembered about her time living and learning from Sofia in Italy for two years.
Rebekah is a catechist and formation leader in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd having completed her training in 1981 in Rome with Dr. Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi. She has translated several of their books and articles from the original Italian and has written and edited various parts of the CGS core texts. Rebekah is a catechist at her parish, St. Patrick Catholic Church, and for the Missionaries of Charity atrium in Memphis, Tennessee. She serves on the formation committee of CGSUSA, as well as on the International Board for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

In the child, there exists a hidden, but profoundly religious nature, which the child desires to live out. For a child to reveal this true nature the adult needs to be prepared for the task of helping this revelation to occur. We need to recognize that our primary call is to be a humble and attentive observer of life.” (“The Religious Experience with the Child Three to Six,” Journals of the Catechesis of the good Shepherd, 1984-1997, 1995 Newsletter, 258-262)
Lynne Worthington joins us on the podcast again to explore the art of observation, a deep-rooted attribute of what we do in The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. That through observation we can “discover the true nature of the child” (Montessori) and we can “begin to see the religious potential of the child” (Cavalletti) and then through observing the child we can “listen deeply to God” (Rojcewicz). She speaks about the basic characteristics and attitudes of an observer (learn to be SILENT, to OBSERVE, to put on the mantle of HUMILITY, to be STILL, and to LISTEN). We discuss the differences between observing in a Montessori classroom and a CGS atrium as well as the differences between observing the different atrium levels.
Lynne speaks into how important Observation is in this work which is shown in our very first Point of Reflection for The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd:
- The child, particularly the religious life of the child, is central to the interest and commitment of the catechist of the Good Shepherd. The catechist observes and studies the vital needs of the child and the manifestations of those vital needs according to the developmental stage of the child
Lynne Worthington worked for 30 years as a catechist for children and adults at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham, NC. She also served as the coordinator for CGS in Immaculata School and for the parish. Since 1991 she has taken part in National Formation courses for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, earning certificates as a catechist for all three levels, ages 3-12 years old. She has participated in numerous formation leadership workshops and is recognized as a formation leader by the National Association of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. She holds an MA degree in Pastoral Studies from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, MO.
Lynne now lives in Ball Ground, GA and volunteers in Atria in the Archdiocese of Atlanta. She and her husband, Bill, have three grown children and two grandchildren.

Kathleen Tong joins us on the podcast today to tell us about how she has been using the method of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in her work in Prison Ministry and the response she has witnessed in our brothers and sisters that she serves there.
Kathleen began her work in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in 2003. She serves as a catechist at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Boerne, Texas and most recently was in the Level III atrium. She is a member of the 2014 CGS-MAPS Cohort at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis.
She currently serves as a Certified Volunteer Chaplain’s Assistant (CVCA) for the Texas Department of Corrections Connally Unit in Kenedy, Texas. Kathleen was invited to introduce Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to offenders of the Catholic community who facilitate RCIA in 2019. Additionally, she serves as Secretary and director on the board of Kolbe Prison Ministries and is a member of the San Antonio Kolbe CORE team. She is also the mom of a 22 year old daughter, Hannah Rose, who grew up a child of the atrium.
In The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, we have 32 Points of Reflection that are intended to represent the principal aspects of the catechesis as they have developed after more than sixty five years of work with children of different countries, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Kathleen’s work of using CGS in her prison ministry work is a great example of characteristic #26 in action:
- The primary commitment of the catechist is working with the children in the atrium; however, this commitment also leads the catechist to be open to the needs of the catechesis in general and making him/her responsive to other forms of service which can be necessary.

“For the Bible I had a master-teacher, Eugenio Zolli, from whom I learned directly and who opened to me a new way of reading the Bible. …With Zolli, the Bible began to open totally new horizons for me. I came to discover a profundity and multiplicity of meanings in the Bible that I had never imagined. I came to realize the enormous value of the Old Testament, not only in relation to the New Testament, but in itself… I came to discover what Augustine calls the ‘golden thread’; that is, the constant presence of God, of God’s plan, in which all the events are linked together, one to the other, in their movement forward to the fullness that all are looking toward.” (Holy Joy, 62-63)
Ann Garrido joins us on the podcast again to dive into a very unique subject: Eugenio Zolli, an influencer in the work of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Zolli was a Jewish rabbi who converted to Roman Catholicism later in life. He was a professor and worked with Sofia Cavalletti in the 1950s. He taught her the Jewish way of reading scripture that greatly influenced her work and The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. He wrote an autobiography, Before the Dawn as well as The Nazarene: Studies in New Testament Exegesis.
Ann Garrido is associate professor of homiletics at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, MO and founding director of the school’s Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies program with an emphasis on the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (MAPS-CGS). She has served as a catechist with children ages 3-12 since 1996. Ann is also a formation leader with the U.S Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for twenty-one years and a member of the association’s formation committee. She is the author of eight books, including Preaching with Children (LTP, 2022) and A Year with Sofia Cavalletti (LTP, 2017).

Cathy Johanni speaks about what is Anthropological Catechesis and how do we live this out in the work of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. She helps us break open chapter 11 of The Religious Potential of the Child. She describes it as putting the human person as the center of catechesis.
Cathy Johanni lives in Columbus, Ohio where she has enjoyed accompanying children on their spiritual journeys for more than two decades. She is recognized as a formation leader in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at levels I, II, and III. She has been involved in Montessori education for a decade, working with children ages 5-14. A member of the editorial committee for the United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Annual Journal. Cathy has authored articles and contributed to The Roman Missal Third Edition and the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: Changes to Materials . She holds a Bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology from Princeton University, a Master’s degree from The Ohio State University and Montessori Elementary certificates. Married for 31 years, she is the mother of five.

Sue Stuhlsatz-Reese joins us on the podcast today to discuss Ch. 10 of The Religious Potential of the Child on The Method of Signs. What does the Method of Signs mean? How is this lived out in our faith? Why is this important in the religious formation of children? And so much more!
Sue Stuhlsatz-Reese began her formation in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in 1996 and has been formed in Levels I, II, III and Infant-Toddler. Her ongoing formation in CGS includes the Cavalletti Heritage Course at Aquinas Institute and being formed by children in the atrium. She currently works with toddlers, Level I and Level II in the atrium. Working with children in the atrium has expanded to include serving as a Level I formation leader and as Board Chair for CGSUSA. Her very favorite people include her husband, three children, and four grandchildren. Sue’s family also includes two rescued dogs.

Claire Paglia is back on the podcast to help us explore wonder especially pertaining to spiritual formation. We talk about how adults can aid or stifle wonder in children and dive into the how wonder aids the exploration of the Kingdom of God parables in the atrium.
Claire Paglia is a child of the atrium. As an adult, she is an AMI-trained guide who has been in the primary environment for 12 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in education with a concentration in Montessori from Loyola University, Maryland. She worked for a year as a course assistant for the primary training center. In 2012, she received her Level I formation and has been a catechist at her church in varying capacities since then. She enjoys spending time with her family and particularly enjoys preparing Montessori-friendly spaces at home for her three children.

Marilee Quinn joins us on the podcast today to discuss the power of silence in prayer as spoken about at the end of Ch. 7 of The Religious Potential of the Child on Prayer. She helps us see the beauty of silence, how to help children make silence, and specifically speaks about Maria Montessori’s Silence Game
Marilee Quinn has been a Primary Montessori Guide at Sancta Maria School in Eudora KS for 37 years. She fell in love with the Good Shepherd at the first national training in South Bend Indiana and for the past 30 years has been listened to the voice of the Shepherd with the children in all three levels of CGS. As a formation leader for Levels 1,2,&3, she have been blessed to listen to the Shepherd with adults as well. Most recently the Shepherd called her to be the director of Mary’s Catholic Montessori Training Center. She served one term on the CGS National Board and currently serves on the CGS Discernment Committee. She received an AMI certificate from Avila College and BA in Early Childhood Education from the University of Kansas. Her greatest joy is being a mother and grandmother.
